Investigating early neuronal dysfunction

Investigator-initiated clinical research connecting glaucoma, retinal function, and systemic risk factors.

Completed pilot research

Retinal ganglion cell function and sleep apnea

A prospective pilot study evaluated retinal ganglion cell function in patients with normal-tension glaucoma and obstructive sleep apnea before and after clinically indicated OSA treatment. Improvements in electrophysiological measures were observed, supporting further investigation of early neuronal dysfunction.

These preliminary observations do not establish a causal treatment effect or prevention of glaucoma progression.

Research focus

Functional assessment in early glaucoma

GRO investigates pattern electroretinography alongside optical coherence tomography and visual-field testing to better characterize early retinal ganglion cell dysfunction.

Research in development

Longitudinal NTG–OSA investigation

GRO is developing a multicenter longitudinal study to examine relationships among sleep apnea, treatment exposure, and changes in retinal ganglion cell function and structure over time.

This research is proposed; participating sites are not yet confirmed and recruitment is not open.
